‘Hungry man’ bites off father’s finger

A HUNGRY man is an angry man. The adage proved true when a 25-year-old man from Wooden Farm plots on the outskirts of Gweru recently went berserk and assaulted his half sister and bit off his stepfather’s finger after he discovered that the two had consumed all the food meant for breakfast.

According to court documents, Moses Dube arrived home from the fields last Sunday feeling hungry.
He walked into the kitchen only to find his half-sister, Velisiwe Mpofu, taking the last sip of her coffee.

On realising that there was nothing left for him to eat, Dube pounced on his half-sister, throwing punches all over her body.

The court heard that the father, Mtikitivha Mpofu, rushed to the kitchen in a bid to restrain Dube from inflicting further harm on his half-sister. Unfortunately for Mtikitivha Mpofu, he met with worse punishment as one of his fingers from his left hand was bitten off. As if that was not enough, Dube grabbed an axe and struck his stepfather once on the head.

He was later restrained by neighbours who rushed to the scene upon hearing screams for help from Mtikitivha Mpofu and his daughter.
Dube was on Saturday hauled before Gweru magistrate, Judith Taruvinga facing three counts of domestic violence.

He pleaded guilty to the three charges and was remanded in custody to today for sentencing.

The court was sent into raptures when Dube said he was so hungry on the day in question to an extent that he could have swallowed his stepfather’s finger.

“Your worship, I was very hungry on that day and I was also angry that my family ate all the food meant for breakfast when I was still away working in the fields. I don’t even know what happened to that piece of a finger that I bit off. I think I swallowed it,” he said.
Taruvinga then convicted Dube and remanded him in custody for sentencing today.
