A HURUNGWE man has been jailed 11 years after raping a mentally challenged minor.
Chandafira Chisandu, 23, was convicted by Karoi regional magistrate, Solomon Jenya.
Chisandu was initially slapped with a 13-year jail term before two years were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining 11 years shall be effective.
The complainant in this case is a mentally-challenged female juvenile aged 15.
Prosecuting, Wadzanai Madzorera, told the court that sometime last year, the juvenile took her donkeys to the river where she met Chisandu.
He asked her to have sexual intercourse with him but she refused.
The court heard that Chisandu told the minor that she was his wife and he was going to marry her.
He told her that he was going to find some money for lobola.
Chisandu then raped her once.
He then told the juvenile to keep the matter to herself and not to tell anyone since he was going to marry her and they were going to live together.
The court heard Chisandu raped her on a number of occasions.
The matter came to light on December 1, last year, when her aunt suspected her of being pregnant as a result of her bulging stomach.
The juvenile narrated her ordeal to the aunt and uncle.
A police report was made leading to Chisandu’s arrest.
