MR Maxim Nordenfeldt Cogill (79) of Gwelo, died suddenly from a heart attack in Que Que on Wednesday morning 14 hours after his wife Anne Elizabeth (78) had died in hospital after a long illness.
She was his second wife and his son, Albert of Que Que, said yesterday he was convinced his father had died of a broken heart.
“He saw mum on Tuesday before she died and the next morning he complained of a pain in his chest. He collapsed and died in the bathroom of his granddaughter’s house where he was staying,” he said.
“I think really it was for the best, for he was a lost soul without her. I am sure the old man is happy now with mum.”
Mr Cogill had lived in Gwelo for many years. For most of his life, he was a butcher and before he retired was with a life insurance firm.
He leaves one son and one daughter. He and his wife will be buried in a joint funeral at the Gwelo Cemetery on Saturday.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
Matters of the heart need to be treated carefully because they can be very contentious and can lead to tragedies. There have been too many deaths in recent years related to these matters.
It is important to ensure that when people who face tragedies like deaths in their lives they can affect them in a terrible way. They should get assistance timeously, to prevent further tragedies.
It is also important to ensure that mental health and matters of the heart are attended to urgently and appropriate support structures are readily available.
