The adage — charity begins at home — rings true when it comes to Bulawayo artiste Hwabaraty who is engaged in efforts to nurture talent and fulfil dreams of young school children who include street kids.

Hwabaraty, a house/kwaito artiste, has been involved in a lot of charity projects which include helping street kids by nurturing and grooming their artistic skills.

“I am involved in a project called ‘The Hot House’, where I train street kids in Theatre acting, dancing and music. We rehearse at Scripture Union Thuthuka in Bulawayo, where their basic needs are also catered for,” said the dreadlocked artiste.

Working with children is not something new to Hwabaraty. Last year, the Iyasa choreographer adapted a schools theatre version of the play, “The Gospel of Othello”, which was produced by Lara Week and was showcased at the Ibumba Arts Festival.

“Last year I managed to work with children from different high schools around Bulawayo in producing the schools version of the play ‘The Gospel of Othello’, which featured at the Ibumba Arts Festival. I was delighted by their performance on stage and it shows that my efforts are paying off,” said the Woza Nhlanhla hit-maker.

Hwabaraty also stated that he will continue to work with children as he views them as the future of the country especially in the arts. He added that disadvantaged children are his main focus because doing so connects him with his own past experiences.

“Growing up I faced so many challenges, if I didn’t confront these obstacles I wouldn’t be here today. I believe it’s my calling to help these children so I can give them hope.”
