Makeup fails of all

MAKEUP has changed over centuries, but some looks tend to age better than others. What makeup looks do we wish would never, ever come back? Well . . .

Instagram eyebrows

Those #eyebrows-on-fleek that fade from bold and dark at the tail to almost non-existent near the nose. Also known as the shape and colour of absolutely no one’s natural eyebrows, ever. I think its past time for the Instagram brow to be over. This is not meant to insult anyone. Some of you are killing the eyebrow game with your super sharp angles and shadowing. Your brows look so perfect that they could be fake. It’s been fun! It’s been interesting! Let’s move on.

Contouring

The past few years has taught us many things, and the power of a good contour was certainly one of them, but too much of a good thing is just plain bad. Some have to gone from contouring just our faces to everything else possible even the ears. Cream contour products offer that chiselled look that works under bright red carpet lights and for photo shoots but using these products everyday is just excessive. The truth is, contouring can easily look obvious and strange, and it really photographs better. It’s a lot of work; it’s expensive and has just gotten out of hand. A heavy contour isn’t flattering; instead grab a good highlighting powder.

Pouty lips

Duck lips, trout pout whatever you want to call it, an over lined, blown-up pucker is on its way out. Like brows, your lips need to be in balance with all of your other facial features. There are so many problems with over-lining your lips: First, it’s tricky to pull off in a way that doesn’t look completely fake. Then, even if you do, a staged pout can make your face look fuller. Big lips make your face look fat, so then you contour like crazy. In the end you look like a poorly executed Kylie Jenner.

Stiletto nails

This trend had a major moment in 2014, and beauticians had high hopes it would fizzle eventually. “But look at them, coming for revenge longer and sharper than before. Trend forecasters agree that two years has been a long enough time for these claw-like nails to reign. Nudes and greys in a classic short, square shape are more modern, not to mention practical.

Gothic makeup

We’ve seen overdone smoky eyes and black lipstick on everyone from celebrities to models on Fashion Week runways. And you know what happens when celebrities and supermodels rock a look, everyone starts wearing it in their everyday lives. But gothic, witchy makeup can be too overwhelming for many faces and most situations. Jet-black lips on casual Friday at the office? Absolutely not! While heavy smoked-out eyes and lips are fun for special occasions, for everyday, this beauty trend is best left behind.

Timely and costly no-makeup makeup routines

Fittingly for a rather odd trend, there are two sides to no-makeup makeup. The good news is that more of us than ever aren’t afraid to appear in the wild without winged liner. The bad news is that it’s put more pressure on us to “fake” it. So when a no-makeup makeup beauty routine costs much, we have to roll our eyes a little. Wear your makeup or don’t wear your makeup, let’s not complicate things.

Instagram beauty filters

These apps on Instagram, and social media as a whole, are making us all look the same, makeup-wise. And honestly, it’s kind of true. Women (and some men) are following the Instagram makeup formula to a tee: super sharp Instagram brows, perfectly contoured and sculpted faces, loads of highlighter, over-lined lips with matte lipstick, smooth eye shadow, black liner wings so sharp they could kill someone, and, basically, a face that looks so smooth it might be Photo-shopped (in a lot of pictures, it probably is). This kind of overdone makeup looks great in photos but in reality does not exist. Let’s just keep it real.

There is nothing wrong with looking natural and normal. It only becomes a challenge when trends blur the lines between normal and exaggerated.
