THE spotlight will fall on Hwange in the first week of April when the Matabeleland North Volleyball Association hosts the Zimbabwe Open Tournament, a competition that is shaping up to be a defining moment for the province’s sporting ambitions.

With the Hwange Tennis Club set to welcome some of the country’s top volleyball talent, anticipation is steadily building for what promises to be a high-level showcase of skill, experience and emerging potential.

Teams from across Zimbabwe have confirmed participation, turning the tournament into a melting pot of the nation’s premier league quality.

Matabeleland North will be represented by Crocs Volleyball Club and Shalom Volleyball Club, who will have the added motivation of performing on home soil.

They will, however, face stiff competition from established sides such as Black Rhinos (men and women), Black Mambas (men and women), UZ Wolves, Harare City, D Knights from Mutare, Diamonds of Gweru, Beitbridge Eagles, Chimoio from Bulawayo and Hwange Grizzlers.

Matabeleland North Volleyball Association chairperson Lincorn Moyo believes hosting such a tournament is a major step in raising the standards of the game in the province.

“This tournament is important for us as a province because it brings premier league teams and top players right into our backyard. It gives our players and coaches a rare opportunity to compete and learn at the highest level without travelling,” said Moyo.

He added that the presence of seasoned coaches and elite players will provide invaluable lessons to upcoming talent.

“Our young players will be exposed to some of the best minds behind the Zimbabwe volleyball brand.

“That kind of experience is critical for their development and for improving the overall standard of the game in Matabeleland North,” he said.

Beyond the court, the tournament is also expected to boost sport tourism in Hwange, with teams and supporters travelling from different parts of the country.

With registration still open and more teams expected to confirm by the weekend, the stage is set for a vibrant and competitive tournament.
