FORMER Premiership side Hwange claimed the coalmining town’s bragging rights by beating cross town rivals Makomo 2-1 in a Southern Region Division One League at the Colliery Stadium on Saturday.
A brace by veteran striker Gilbert Zulu powered Hwange to a memorable victory, as they maintained a two-point lead at the top of the league table.
Hwange took their points’ tally to 25 from 12 games.
Makomo’s consolation goal came from a converted penalty by Morgan Mungombe.
Hwange have now picked up five points out of a possible nine in games against teams from the coalmining town.
They drew 0-0 with perennial campaigners ZPC Hwange on the opening day of the season and drew 1-1 against league debutants Moto Moto before edging Makomo at the weekend.
Makomo, pre-season championship favourites after roping in experienced coach Rahman Gumbo, appear to be losing grip in the title race and are 10th in the 16-team table. Makomo have 15 points from 11 games and trail Hwange, who have played a game more, by 10 points.
Amos Nyoni’s strike handed Tsholotsho maximum points against anchors ZRP Bulawayo. Tsholotsho have defied the odds by keeping within two points of Hwange.
Two second half goals by Darlington Munkule and Mostaf Phiri powered Bosso 90 to a 2-0 win over Talen Vision, while ZPC Leopards continued with their fine form, as they beat army side Indlovu Iyanyathela 2-1.
Leopards scored through Malvern Dube and Tawanda Zinaka, while Ackim Gwaendepi got Indlovu Iyanyathela’s facesaver.
