IN what could easily turn out to be the biggest football club executive, struggling Hwange FC reportedly has a 15-member executive committee, which is gobbling about $5,000 in monthly allowances. Some members of the executive are believed to have abandoned their mandate as workers’ committee members and smuggled themselves into the football team’s executive committee led by human resources practitioner Joseph Zulu.

The coalminers, however, claim other members are mere sub-committee members assigned to carry out the same tasks “as mandated by the company”.

“People seem to be enriching themselves at the expense of the club. Surely such money could be used to capacitate our juniors, who are the future of the club. Hwange used to get its players from our local league called Wafa (Wankie Amateur Football Association), but that’s no longer the case now. We now have a boozers’ league made up of 25-year-olds,” said a disgruntled Hwange fan.

The club’s executive committee members are appointed by the Hwange Colliery Company Limited managing director, who is the club president. Zulu is deputised by Artwell Ndebele, a workers’ representative for the management while the secretary-general is Bekithemba Sibanda.

The other executive committee members are Lovemore Sibanda (treasurer), Tobias Mandoreba (media and liaison officer) and Khumbulani Mbano, the head of the secretariat.

“Those six are the bona-fide executive committee members,” said another Chipangano fan. Mandoreba refuted claims that the executive is bloated, although he skirted the allowance allegations.

“What must be clear is that the other members are just sub-committee members who perform certain duties as and when mandated by the company. I’ll not comment on the allowances as I’m not aware of that,” said Mandoreba.

Hwange are yet to register a win in their two games played in the league so far, conceding five goals and scoring none. Hwange FC executive
