HAVING turned professional last year, it was all smiles for rising boxing star Nyasha Hwata as he bagged his first professional belt last Saturday after he was crowned the country’s National Light Welterweight champion.
Hwata was crowned the Light Welterweight champion with a unanimous decision after 12 rounds at 7 Arts Theatre where he beat Tinofadzwa Chikerema to land his first professional title. The 24-year-old boxer described bagging his first belt as a professional boxer as a dream come true “Winning a belt is something that I have always dreamt of,” said Hwata.
Hwata believes that winning his first title fight will open doors for him as he has his sights on flying the Zimbabwe flag by becoming a World champion one day. “I believe winning the belt is my breakthrough. Before winning I had limited fights but this is a turning point for my career.
“This one fight I had always looked up to and I believe after winning the title, doors for more fights will now be opened,” said Hwata.
The 24-year-old boxer continues to dream big and has set his eyes on becoming a world champion someday.
“Now we are looking forward to more fights with my next target being an African Champion before I go for the World Champion belt,” said Hwata. Hwata has risen through the boxing ranks from being an amateur boxer since 2006 before turning pro last year.
Trained by Aspiration Mutore from Boxfit Academy, Hwata turned professional last year. His debut light welterweight was against John Andrew in the first match of the trilogy series of Manyuchi Boxing Farewell tournaments in Chivhu. Mutore is optimistic about Hwata becoming a renowned national boxer.
“Our dream is to have him (Hwata) to become a world champion in 2026.
“And the first step towards that vision was to attain the light welterweight national title.
“The next target will be to attain an African title belt in his weight class and to defend it as preparation to challenge for a world title,” said Mutore.
