I blame Tilder Moyo, says unrepentant rapist

AN UNREPENTANT rapist, who was on Tuesday found guilty of aggravated indecent assault after abusing a fellow inmate at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, has blamed the popular Tilda Moyo radio show on StarFM for arousing him and prompting him into committing the offence.

Brian Shereni, who is a DJ, said this as he was providing mitigation in his case before magistrate Sandra Mupindu.

Shereni told the court that on the night in question, he and other inmates were listening to the popular radio, which is broadcast on StarFM, and revolves around sex and other domestic issues.

He said the issues which were being discussed on the show aroused him and resulted in him forcing himself on his victim.

Quizzed on whether this was his first time he had done such a thing, Shereni said it was not.

“This wasn’t my first time, this was actually my third time, the other two occasions were consensual so when we were caught doing it in the cells, we were just punished at the prison.

“This one blew out of proportion because I made a mistake and forced myself on my fellow cellmate, which I admit was wrong,” he said.

Shereni told the court that the conviction that he is serving now is also for aggravated indecent assault.

He was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment last year on February 15.

In aggravation, prosecutor Zvikomborero Mupasa produced the extract of Shereni’s conviction and urged the court to impose the maximum sentence as he has proven to be unrepentant.

“He violated the complainant’s rights, while I do appreciate that the offender pleaded guilty and saved the court’s time and apologised to the complainant, there is evidence on record which shows that he’s most likely to commit similar offences as he is unrepentant.

“The aggravating factors outweigh the mitigatory factors hence nothing is stopping this court from imposing the maximum sentence,” he said.

The incident happened in October last year in Cell E at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.
