In an interview since he left the group, Mjintu — who debuted alongside Mutodi popularly known as Tatu Muluba in rhumba circles — said he groomed his 19-year-old son to continue from where left.
“It was purely a strategy that I groomed my son and I am pleased to say that he is a star in the making. So to all fans who thought I had abandoned the group I want to assure them that all is well.
“I will be mentoring my son and be there whenever he needs me,” Mjintu said. He said there was a bright future ahead for the Zare brand, which he formedand would do everything possible to ensure that the group members are catered for.
“As for the group members they assured me that they will support my son, who although he is studying for his A-Levels this year, always makes time for rehearsals and shows as well. So far, Learnmore has successfully led the group in smaller areas like Karoi, Bindura and Shamva where we used to hold shows,” he said.
On his move to the Real Sounds of Africa, Mjintu said his job was to ensure the group’s versatility and carve a niche in sungura. “As you are aware the group has been customised and in that regard I am supposed to bring that sungura flair which is a favourite of many Zimbabweans,” he said.
Today Tatu Muluba — alongside Shiga Shiga, Spencer Khumulani and Guyson Sixpence — go into the studio to record the group’s first all sungura album due for release in April.
