VETERAN musician and MAPIPI church leader, Hosiah Chipanga is a dejected man. He has been trying to smile, mix and mingle with a legion of his fans across the country, but deep down his heart, he is troubled, the Kwachu kwachu hit-maker revealed to The Weekender recently. In an interview, the prolific songwriter who staged a memorable show at Club Mandisa on Sunday could not hide his frustrations and pain over the way people are treating him, particularly show promoters.
He spoke with a heavy heart, saying he was not getting the recognition he deserved and was living in isolation. He took a swipe at a prominent promoter (name withheld) for using and dumping him. “Kana dziri mhepo ndichatombonogezwa munyama nyangwe ndiri bishop wechurch (I think I need cleansing though I am a bishop in my church),” said Chipanga.
“I am living in isolation. The promoters don’t care about me. They wanted me when I was useful to them. They don’t need me because zvavo zvakaita. I have been isolated in so many angles. I am heartbroken. “We need support. We need to survive, but they don’t care. I am overwhelmed by the support I got (at Mandisa). I never knew people still appreciate my music like this.
“You could not tell it was a Sunday, but people came in their numbers,” he said. The aging musician who has 25 albums to date has won two accolades which are 2004 ZIMA Best Sungura Artiste award and 2005 NAMA Outstanding musician. In most of his local shows, Chipanga has been getting about $200 flat fees and that amount would be shared among seven band members including him and other expenses such as transport and food.
