I WAS ABOUT TO QUIT POETRY: DUBE

SPOKEN word artist, Obert Dube, says he was about to quit poetry due to pressure, family issues and midlife crisis.

The poet opened up at the 21st National Arts Merit Awards held at the Harare International Conference Centre last Saturday.

He won the Outstanding Poet award, and in his acceptance speech, Dube said he almost gave up.

“I have been a poet for more than 20 years. Being one of the best poets in the country comes with a lot of responsibilities.

“Three years ago, life took a turn and I was on the verge of quitting, but my brother told me that I was ruling the roost in Zimbabwe and therefore quitting was more of letting down my people,” he said.

“I’m a proud Zimbabwean and I will keep representing my country.

Dube has been doing well both locally and abroad.

He is famed for grooming a number of aspiring poets as well as young students.

Dube is also a brilliant script writer and mentor.
