I won’t quit music – Douglas Chimbetu

ALLAN Chimbetu’s son, Douglas, says he will not throw in the towel despite keeping a low profile.

Now in his early 30s, Douglas was once touted as the Dendera music heir before marital and social challenges took their toll on him.

At one point, Douglas was completely distracted from music as he fought court battles with one of the women he was involved with.

His father, family and friends gave him a shoulder but he still remains determined to find his feet again.

After being affected by the Covid-19 induced lockdown, which saw him being grounded for months, his cousin Suluman has been giving him a helping hand.

In recent weeks, he has been featuring at Suluman’s shows as a guest performer and the move is paying well for him.

“We are still around and we won’t throw in the towel,” said the media-shy singer.

“I and my brother (cousin) Sulu, we are good buddies.

“There are things we do as a family and we always give each other a shoulder when one is going through a lot.

“We have learnt this from our fathers, who stood by each other, and never competed against each other.

“We would like to use the same template our fathers used to protect the family legacy.”

Douglas, who could not reveal some of his plans, said he was ready to learn from Suluman.

“Suluman has demonstrated his true love to the entire family.

“In life we need each other and I am just grateful that my family loves and supports me,” he said.

Suluman said it was his responsibility to play the brotherly role.

“I cannot say I am perfect but I will always cheer up my brothers and cousins.

“We are one big family which rejoices in the Lord and I am happy I am simply doing my best.

“I want him to be back again in the game, a determined and focused man.

“He is talented and age is still on his side, a plus to him,” he said.

A former Allan Wilson student, Douglas grew up in a musical family and was largely taught by his father.

He can play both the lead and rhythm guitars while his strength lies on vocal projection.
