A SWIFT police operation at Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus led to the arrest of Simbarashe Jimmy Madziva (27) on October 2, 2025, for unlawful possession of a pistol loaded with a magazine containing seven blank cartridges. The suspect implicated Munyaradzi Chitsike (39), who was subsequently apprehended.
This arrest comes amid Zimbabwe’s ongoing nationwide firearm amnesty, which runs from 24 September to 24 October 2025. President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the amnesty to encourage citizens to surrender unlicensed firearms without fear of prosecution. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi emphasized that the initiative aims to reduce crimes linked to unlicensed firearms, stating, “Investigations show that some individuals still hold guns despite changes in circumstances, such as the closure of companies, expired gun club memberships, or the death of licensed owners.”
Authorities have warned that after the amnesty period, the Zimbabwe Republic Police will conduct checks and verifications on anyone suspected of possessing illegal weapons. “The public should take advantage of this amnesty to regularise their possession and ownership of firearms,” Commissioner Nyathi advised.
Both Madziva and Chitsike are expected to face charges related to the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
