WARRIORS captain Marvelous Nakamba is set to report for national duty with a renewed sense of purpose, determined to redeem himself following a difficult Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.
Nakamba is expected to be among the first arrivals at the Warriors’ camp as the squad assembles for the international break.
The midfielder, who has struggled for playing time at Sheffield Wednesday since joining during the mid-season transfer break, has divided opinion since the AFCON tournament earlier this year where his handball in the group stages attracted a backlash.
“I am here to fight,” Nakamba said.
“When you represent the national team, you do not give up because of difficult moments. You show up. That is what I intend to do.”
A source close to Warriors technical team said they are aware of Nakamba’s commitment to represent the country.
“Marvelous made it clear from our first conversation that his commitment to the national team has never wavered,” said the source.
“He understands the expectations and the criticism that comes with this level. What matters to us is the attitude he has brought into camp. He is focused, he is training with intensity, and he is ready to contribute.”
Nakamba’s recent club form has been a source of concern.
Since joining Sheffield Wednesday from Luton Town, the defensive midfielder has been making cameo appearances from the bench, with his playing time significantly limited since the turn of the year.
However, the player’s fitness levels have been closely monitored, and his experience is viewed as a critical asset for the squad.
“Club situations are temporary. What we look for is the mentality a player brings when he steps onto the pitch for his country. Marvelous has that in abundance. He has been a key figure in this team for years, and he is not about to let a difficult period define him.”
Ahead of the Four Nations Cup in Botswana, to feature Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Nakamba is aware of his situation.
“I have been at a low point, both with the national team and at the club,” Nakamba said.
“But I am not finished. I have too much respect for this country and for this team to walk away because things are hard. I will keep my head high, and I will fight every minute.” Before travelling to Botswana, the Warriors are scheduled for a friendly match against Highlanders at Barbourfields tomorrow.
