I’m successfully balancing music, food and fashion: Feli Nandi

Prince Mushawevato

FELI NANDI — born Felistas Winnie Chipendo — is seemingly never one to shy away from venturing into uncharted territories, making her an inspiration to many.

Juggling music; fashion, through her African-themed clothing line Vasikana Vemarokwe; and catering, under the KwaNandi brand, she has undoubtedly proven to be a versatile character.

How she creates time for all these equally demanding trades that require her undivided attention every day baffles many.

In fact, when one visits the eatery, it is not unusual to see the singer mingling with her clients. At times, she is active in the kitchen, helping create some of the savoury dishes served at the joint.

This might not be much of a challenge for her, as she has highlighted her love for the kitchen and garden.

Similarly, she takes a leading role in all the designs created under Vasikana Vemarokwe, producing both formal and informal attire.

“It was a challenge balancing things in the first days, but with time, I have devised ways to make everything possible,” she told The Sunday Mail Entertainment

“Yes, the schedules are demanding, but it has to work. I have created functional systems with the help of the people I work with, who I must say are extremely cooperative.”

Her hands-on approach and ability to diversify revenue streams are likely to be a guide for fellow singers who often struggle when the music business ceases to be viable.

Many struggle to invest while they are in the spotlight and end up destitute after quitting showbiz for one reason or another.

“I have had the privilege of establishing ventures that I am passionate about. That way, I do not get annoyed by work but rather take it as a challenge,” she said.

“With all the day-to-day demands, I still make time for my kids. I enjoy spending time with them.” She revealed that she had been busy in the past few days finalising her forthcoming album.

“The studio and stage demand a fair share of my time. I have spent the past few days putting some final touches to my forthcoming second studio album titled ‘Ndisiyei’, which is due for release next month,” said Feli.

Her debut album, “Izwi”, was released in 2022. In between, she punctuated her music career with the release of over 15 singles and several music videos.

Since embarking on her solo music career, the vivacious songbird has been setting the bar high with pulsating music releases and live performances.

Arguably one of the best, if not the best, female musicians in the country at present, Feli continues to reach new heights. She hopes her upcoming eight-track project will maintain this momentum.

“The trick lies in creating a balance. I have to make everything work. The demands of the fashion business are not the same as what is expected in the food trade. When you talk about music, it is a different challenge altogether.” On “Ndisiyei”, the singer explores various social issues with a message and sound that resonate across the generational divide. The album will be launched on March 22 in Harare.

“A total of eight songs complete the album. I started working on the project a year ago and I feel it is now ripe,” said Feli.

“We are talking about day-to-day situations that we face and how we tackle them. Our trials and tribulations, joyous moments, et cetera. I worked on the album with all age groups in mind.” The singer’s seemingly fruitful solo career began at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 after she left Mbeu’s Mhodzi Tribe. Her soulful voice, powerful lyrics and electrifying performances have proved to be her greatest weapons in the game.

In a typical “if it is not broken, do not fix it” approach, “Ndisiyei”, produced by Feli’s long-time producer Alicious, has the singer’s signature touch.

In her previous recordings, the former Queen Elizabeth School learner has collaborated with fellow singers such as Jah Prayzah, Comic Pastor, Trevor Dongo and Freeman.

However, she has shown her desire to combine forces with revered gospel singer Minister Michael Mahendere, Gemma Griffiths, Ammara Brown and Tamy Moyo.

“I do not have any collaborations on this new album, maybe in later projects. We have maintained the touch that our fans have become accustomed to, but I feel like I tapped into a new sound, more like an urban sound,” she said.

She is hoping to release the new album concurrently with three new videos.
