NEW: Zimbabwe braces for heavy rains, flash flooding

THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning for heavy rains and thunderstorms across Zimbabwe, starting today until Tuesday.

The heaviest downpours, potentially exceeding 50mm, are expected in Manicaland, Masvingo, Midlands and Matabeleland South provinces.

The risk of flash flooding, strong winds and hailstones is expected to be high during this period.

“A low-pressure system currently over the Mozambique Channel is intensifying and moving westwards,” said MSD.

This system is expected to bring widespread thunderstorms and heavy rain, initially impacting eastern and southern regions before spreading across much of the country.

The MSD, in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, has urged citizens to take precautions.

“Due to the intensity of the rainfall during this period, flash floods are highly likely,” said MSD.

“Before the storms arrive, people should mend rooftops, secure loose items, trim hanging branches and ensure animals are safe,” the advisory states.
