Government has announced a six-month suspension of import duty on 15 basic commodities, including cooking oil, sugar and maize-meal to ensure consumers have convenient access to affordable goods.
In a letter addressed to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra), Finance and Economic Development Permanent Secretary Mr George Guvamatanga said the levy on duty on rice, flour, cooking oil, margarine, salt, sugar, maize-meal, milk powder, infants milk formula, tea, petroleum jelly, toothpaste, bath soap, laundry bar and washing powder has been suspended.
“The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority is also requested to urgently draft the necessary legal instrument and implement the duty suspension beginning midnight, that is May 17, 2022, which should coincide with the gazetting of relevant legislation,” he said.
“Furthermore, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is expected to complement the measure through the inclusion of the above goods on the Open General Import Licence.”
Goods that are on the OGIL do not need a special permit to import.
