The inaugural Rhumba Festival in Bulawayo is set to make its debut in the city on Saturday, with organisers saying the event reflects the growing popularity and evolving perception of rhumba music.
Once regarded as a genre largely associated with rural audiences, rhumba has steadily gained wider acceptance across diverse social spaces, according to event co-organiser DJ Keitho.

“Back then, people used to think this kind of music was only for people in rural areas, but now everyone appreciates it. You find it being played at street parties and events beyond borders,” said DJ Keitho.

The festival taking place at a local nightspot will feature performances by Clement Magwaza and Macray Super Sounds, Khakhakha, Mxolisi “Mr Bones” and Abigail Mabuza.
DJ Keitho said the selection of artistes was influenced by long-standing working relationships built over the years within the music industry.
“We’ve worked with many groups over the years, and that pushed us to rope them into this first edition,” he said.
Beyond entertainment, organisers say the festival is also meant to spotlight the deeper messages embedded in rhumba music.
“Rhumba songs carry messages; some give hope, while others offer comfort in everyday life,” said Keitho.
