Bulawayo came alive on Friday as Sound of Joy Chorale delivered a breathtaking performance at the Songs of the Soil: Africa’s Sacred Story concert, leaving a near-capacity crowd roaring with applause after a moving showcase of African music.
Held under the theme Songs of the Soil: Africa’s Sacred Story, the concert attracted music lovers from across the city. The programme featured performances from several guest choirs, including Catholic Gregorian Choral Choir, Bulawayo Choristers, Sweet Melodies Chorale and Ubuntu Voices Ensemble, alongside church choirs and solo vocalists, each adding a unique touch to the sacred musical showcase.

One of the standout moments came when Sound of Joy performed a solemn piece reflecting on the Last Supper of Jesus, drawing the audience into reflection through rich vocal arrangements and emotional delivery. The choir later lifted the atmosphere with an energetic performance celebrating Africa’s heritage ahead of Africa Day.
A multilingual set followed, with the ensemble seamlessly performing in various African languages, showcasing the beauty of the continent’s cultural diversity while reinforcing the concert’s message of unity through music. The performance ultimately brought the house down, with the audience erupting into thunderous applause and cheers as Sound of Joy concluded their set.
Speaking after the showcase, audience member Thando Sibanda praised the event’s impact.
“I think the show was a step in the right direction. Attendance was good and the performances were outstanding,” said Sibanda.
Formed in 2019, the choir has grown into one of Bulawayo’s respected choral groups, earning recognition through collaborations such as the 2023 German Embassy Buddy Bear unveiling, winning the Econet iJoy Afta Joy Challenge and securing third place at the 2024 Tiro Mpane National Choral Eisteddfod.
