Independence preps on course

This year’s Independence celebrations in Manicaland province will be decidedly distinct from the previous commemorations in line with the advent of the new political dispensation, a Government official has said.

In an interview with The Herald, provincial administrator Mr Edgars Seenza indicated that the new political environment naturally heralds “a new way of thinking and doing things”.

“We are now under a new political dispensation, which calls for a new way of thinking and doing things. Against such a background, this year’s Independence festivities are to be celebrated in a different style, with the first event to be held on April 13 at the National Arts Gallery in Mutare as a warm-up to the main event to be held at Mutare Agricultural Showground on April 17,” said Mr Seenza.

He said the pre-event fete to be held at the National Arts Gallery would be characterised by showcasing the liberation war history in appreciation of the armed struggle that gave birth to Zimbabwe’s Independence.

This would be followed by the main Independence gala set for Mutare Agricultural Showgrounds.

Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Monica Mutsvangwa will grace the event.

Mr Seenza noted that preparations for the festivitiesare currently at an advanced stage with the organising team meeting weekly, giving each other feedback on progress.

“ I am well pleased with the progress made so far and confident this year’s celebrations are going to be bigger and better,” he said.

His office, he added, was open to well-wishers who would like to make contributions towards the festivities.

“My office has been opened up and is still open to donations by well wishers to aid in the Independence festivities,” he said.

Mr Seenza encouraged all Zimbabweans to attend the event.
