India and Pakistan are embroiled in a diplomatic fall-out as the former launched a series of overnight strikes targeting what it described as “terrorist infrastructure” in both Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Media reports quoted Indian officials saying their actions, under Operation Sindor, were a “focused, measured, and non-escalatory” in response to the April 22 terror attacks that killed 26 Indian tourists in its Kashmir region, which it blamed on Pakistan.
However, Pakistan has denied any involvement.
The escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours has raised fears of a wider conflict after Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif labelled the offensive “an act of war” and vowed to respond appropriately.
According to Pakistan officials, India’s cross-territory strikes killed 26 people, including children. It also injured 46 people.
The volatile Kashmir region, long a flashpoint between the two countries, is at the centre of the latest confrontation.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars over the disputed territory since gaining independence in 1947.
Both nations claim Kashmir in its entirety, but control different parts.
