GWERU City Council will this month launch a blitz compelling residents and businesses to settle their bills.

This comes amid indications that the local authority was owed US$20,6 million in unpaid rates and this was affecting service delivery.

The city’s spokesperson, Ms Vimbai Chingwaramusee, said the blitz will run from May 19 to 23.

She urged all ratepayers to settle their bills to avoid inconveniences.

“During that period, we are going to be closing down businesses that are operating without licences,” she said.

“We are also going to cut off water supplies for all those who have not paid up their bills.”

Ms Chingwaramusee said residents were not paying their water bills.

“From the business side, others are not paying their water bills, while others are not paying rates,” she said.

“We also have businesses that have decided to operate without legalising their operations, which is affecting our operations as a local authority.”
