POLICE have expressed concern over a spike in cases of women killing their newborn babies in Mutare.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo, said the country is now grappling with infanticide, baby dumping and abortions.
“Police in Mutare are investigating a case of infanticide in which the body of a female infant was found dumped in the grass besides a railway line on 23 December near Zimta House.
“Anyone with information to report at any nearest police station,” he said.
Insp Muzondo said the incident comes after another body of a naked baby was recently found stashed inside a plastic bag in Mutare.
The baby was discovered by an unidentified woman, who was travelling with her husband.
Insp Muzondo said informant saw a plastic bag lying in the middle of the road at around 2am and discovered that a baby’s body was inside.
Police said baby dumping was worsening and appealed to members of the public to help deal with this problem.
