PASSENGERS associations have welcomed the introduction of breathalysers at roadblocks, saying the move is essential in reducing road carnages.
In an interview with H-Metro, Zimbabwe Passengers Association (ZPA) secretary-general, Paul Makiwa, said they back the introduction of breathalysers.
“We welcome the police’s decision to introduce breathalysers at roadblocks with both hands.
“Most road accidents have been attributed to human error as some drivers will be under the influence of alcohol and drugs, hence the idea of introducing breathalysers at roadblocks will help reduce drunk driving and save lives,” he said.
“These breathalysers should be used at all times of the year, and not only during the holidays, because people travel to different places everyday.”
ZPA acting spokesperson, Andrew Chibanda, said those found above the limit should face the consequences of their actions.
“Those found above the acceptable limit must face a heavy punishment for it to be a lesson to those with the bad habit of drinking and driving, causing unnecessary accidents on our roads.”
