as prices largely remained stable in the period under review.
“The year-on-year inflation rate for the month of March 2012, as measured by the all- items Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 4 percent, shedding 0,3 percentage points on the February 2012 rate of 4,3 percent,” said the Zimbabwe National Statistical Agency in a statement.
The year-on-year food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation prone to transitory shocks stood at 5,20 percent whilst non-food inflation stood at 3,44 percent.
Inflation rate is given by the percentage change in the index of the relevant month of the current year compared with the index of the same month in the previous year.
It therefore does not necessarily reflect prices changes on a short-term basis.
Month-on-month inflation levels, however, increased as prices rose at an average of 0,43 percent from February 2012, to March this year. Zimstats also said the month on month food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation stood at 0,80 percent in March 2012 gaining 0,39 percentage points on the February 2012 rate of 0,41 percent.
On the other hand, the month-on-month non-food inflation stood at 0,26 shedding 0,22 percentage points on the February 2012 rate of 0,48 percent.
Although the inflation rate has remained stable to date, observers opine that inflationary pressure, largely due to anticipated increases in food prices, could drive inflation in the outlook period.
