POPULAR social media personality Josephine Mutongi has been arrested over the Kuwadzana Extension tragedy that shocked the nation after three children were found dead in the trunk of a car.
National Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest, saying Mutongi was being questioned in connection with her conduct during and after the incident.
Mutongi shot to online fame when she organised a public march in “solidarity” with the victims’ families, urging mourners to wear white and “stand for justice.”
However, her supposed act of compassion quickly turned sour. At the funeral, she allegedly collected cash donations from mourners without the consent of the grieving families.
The move sparked outrage, with many accusing her of turning tragedy into content and chasing clout at the expense of mourning parents.
Mutongi later posted a video on social media claiming she had handed over the funds she collected, but the families reportedly denied knowledge of receiving any money.
Facing mounting public pressure, Mutongi issued an apology, admitting she had been “misunderstood” and “overwhelmed by emotions.”
Police say investigations are ongoing as they probe her role in misrepresentation and possible fraud linked to the funeral donations.
What began as a moment of national grief has now turned into a scandal of influence gone wrong, leaving many wondering whether Mutongi’s tears were for the children or for the cameras.
