Initiate’s feet partially amputated

Bloemfontein — The deputy minister of police on Tuesday visited a boy whose feet had to be partially amputated after he was burned and beaten at an initiation school in Pampierstad in the Northern Cape. Kabelo Mokgweetsi was found naked and covered in blood on 17 November on the road between Pampierstad and Hartswater, reported Volksblad.
He had been beaten with a sjambok and sticks.
Mokgweetsi told reporters after the incident that he had also been told to buy dagga but had refused.

He has since recovered from the incident and is now able to walk on the parts of his feet that haven’t been amputated.
Deputy police minister Makhotso Sotyu said on Tuesday that illegal initiation schools were a big problem.

“People who run illegal initiation schools are criminals. People who know the culture and have experience should be the leaders of initiation schools, not children.”
She was part of a government delegation probing initiation school practices. —  News24
