SCHOOLS and parents have been urged to invest more in sport’s youth programmes.

Speaking at the Ruwa-based Power 11 Football Academy awards over the weekend, Goromonzi District Schools Inspector, Richard Matimbe, said, there is need to allow learners to embrace sporting activities.

“Investment should be in these young learners. “The lack of a youth policy is one of our enemies and this community initiative, in Goromonzi, has given birth to many academies.

“We are opening channels for our learners to embrace the competence-based curriculum.

“If a child decides to take the route of sport, let them go that way.

“Let’s not discourage these young ones from performing in sport.”

Matimbe said some parents still have challenges when their children pursue sport.

“Yesteryear, it would be said, zvekuita masports zvine hurombe mukati.

“Many parents and teachers still have this misconception that sport progress has a negative impact on the students’ academic work.

“There is the recreational aspect in sport and sport is one of the areas in the national curriculum which Power 11 Football Academy is contributing to. “Our province has been doing well in football, Rusunguko and Goromonzi have been working hard to bring visible results.

“They have been working together and if we build synergies, we will go far.

“Power 11 has had many players going for national games.

“Football is now a billion-dollar industry.”

Power 11 Academy chairman, Tapiwa Ndewere, said:

“Our agenda is to catch them young and give them an opportunity to showcase their talents.”
