Invest wisely, musicians told

at the peak of their careers so they can cope financially when less popular.
Speaking at Zimbabwe Music Rights Association annual meeting at College of Music last week, Nyathi, who is the chairman of the association, said musicians have been known to die as paupers.
“We have earned ourselves ridiculous names in society because of the way some of our members have fallen through illness and death. Most of our departed colleagues died impoverished,” he said.
The association had sought partnerships with banks and funeral insurers to help save the face of musicians in life and death.
Bank officials who were present representing TN and Metropolitan banks reiterated their commitment to work with musicians and assist them in securing loans for their musical projects and also to pursue other business interests.
Nyathi also introduced a new package – Celebrity Funeral Fund – a brainchild of the National Art Council of Zimbabwe, which is set to help musicians meet funeral expenses at the time of death.
Nyathi urged musicians to join the facility.
Other issues discussed at the meeting include the issue of musician royalties, which Nyathi said would be released and distributed in June, as was the norm.
Some of the notable artistes who attended the deliberations included dance hall prodigy Winky-D, upcoming urban contemporary song star Jah Prayzah, jazz songstress Dudu Manhenga, urban groovers cum-lovers Roki and Pauline – to mention but a few.
