Masvingo Bureau
Government has completed the rehabilitation of Chizumba and Dinhe irrigation schemes in the drought-prone Mwenezi district.
This has opened up about 100 hectares of land for cultivation.
Dinhe and Chizumba irrigation schemes were damaged by heavy storms in 2000 and 2001.
Fifty plot-holders in Mwenezi benefit directly from the two schemes.
Masvingo Governor and Resident Minister Titus Maluleke said rehabilitation of Dinhe and Chizumba would improve food security in the district.
Governor Maluleke said this was indicative of Government’s commitment to developing the nation.
The bulk of the funds used in the rehabilitation were provided by Government under the Public Sector Investment Programme and NGOs.
Government has been encouraging development of irrigation schemes in Masvingo to shift dependence from rain-fed agriculture as weather patterns shift.
Water for irrigation Chizumba and Dinhe is drawn from Manyuchi Dam, which is itself underutilised due to lack of investment in irrigation in Mwenezi.
