But as all this was happening, some among the congregants were completely absent-minded.
Their hearts were still in Egypt when the mission at hand was to enter Canaan.
In actual fact, there was another church doing its own business concurrently with the known church.
All that was happening in the house of Yahweh and the melodious singing did not capture their imagination.
They were busy showing off their new perfume, costumes, cars and boyfriends.
While seated on the pews, you could scent expensive perfumes from late comers who were looking for places to sit.
There are lots of attention-seekers who will do all they can to be noticed.
If they are holding a newspaper, they will do so in a way that makes everyone leave whatever they will be doing to take a glance on the headline.
It can be worse if they have a new dress. They will ensure the garment defines their contours just to turn heads. Ndionekwe akaparadza musha waHandibviri.
Even when they kiss, they want to do it so openly as if doing so makes the world go round.

And the case is not confined to Adventists.
Almost all churches and places of worship are awash with people who have nothing at all to do with Godliness. All they do is use the houses of prayer as theatres to show off their looks, lewdness and economic circumstance.
That this puts the name of God into disrepute does not affect them. Kutyei kugara beya serinorwadza!
Pentecostal and orthodox churches are facing this problem. Instead of listening to the anointed spreading the word, most people will be busy doing their own thing.
The sermon nowadays is specifically for the pastor and his immediate family and other people who will just be in church to while away time before going for their next assignments.
In so many instances, people frown whenever a pastor takes long to explain a scripture because he will be eating into their time to make money.
Did you know that tailors are using churches as hunting grounds for customers.
“I can make you a good dress with the same cut and fit as that of the deacon’s wife. For yours, I will add a bit more embroidery and use a different lace. You will love the design. I also do wedding cakes at very reasonable prices,” I heard a certain woman advertising her business right in the middle of a sermon.

Fights sometimes break out at churches.
Some people also lose their heads and have sex in church.
Mbanje smokers also sometimes smoke pot in church.
What is it about the church that makes people want to do what they want there?

Apart from dealers, the single and searching among us literally go overdrive right in the middle of sermons.
This is when you hear funny and distracting noises from their phones as you will be trying to hear the word and perhaps get to salvation point.
“Ende nhasi wakarova kadhirezi kekwamushe-mushe. Let mubharanzi finish the sermon tione yekutamba,” a text message from a certain parishioner read.
“Chingonyebera murume wako kuti musoro wavekutema tibve tabaya,” yet another text message read.
And whoever lied to people that sending texts in a public place and worse still in church is a mark of success made a terrible mistake.
Instead of reading the Bible the way others will be doing, some people will be busy fidgeting with their electronic gadgets as if this would cover for the low grades they scored during their time in school.
In any case, doing a wrong thing at the wrong place is a sign of stupidity, foolishness or chibharanzi at its worst.

Most worshippers of today, gentle reader, are a very funny lot.
They will never visit their church unless they have something to show off with or seeking a special favour.
If ever you see them in church, you immediately know they have a new car and a swanky outfit to show off.
To make matters worse, these people will bring along unsuspecting people during their missions.
Man snatchers will strive to go to the church where the wife of their boyfriend worships just to spite her.

“After all, Zimbabwe is a free country and no one can stop me from attending church where I want,” some women of loose morals who thrive on disturbing other people’s peace often say.
It is not unusual to find churches filled to the brim by sick people with hope to be healed or at least have some people to bury them when they eventually pass on.

Others go: “I want to wed and the church is the only place I can get help.

Hakubhadhariswi mari, haurambidzwe kubuda kana waneta, hazvina mapurisa mukati ende futi haungojairirwa nengozi,” some people will tell you while quaffing quarts in a bar as they smoke cigarrettes by the pack.
Gentle reader, a lot happens at the churches and only if people follow God’s ways will we ever entertain the hope of being blessed.
