ISLE BE THERE

GYPSY King Tyson Fury plans to splash out £6million on a private island for his new superyacht, a source told The Sun on Sunday.

The boxing heavyweight, who is worth about £162million, has told pals he wants to buy Drake’s Island off Plymouth, Devon.

It was fortified 400 years ago, used by the military until World War II and went on sale last week.

Tyson, 37, is having a £42million superyacht — the Gypsy King — built for his retirement.

The source says he thinks the island will be a safe spot to moor it as a Navy base is nearby. A source said: “Tyson wants to buy Drakes Island to store his super yacht. “He says it’s protected because they have a naval base down there so his boat will be safe plus it’s close to Cornwall which he loves.

“He says they also do the best ice cream down there. The island is for sale for £6m but he plans to spend £20m doing up the buildings and electrics and everything.

“There’s no stopping Tyson when he’s got an idea in his head, it’s one thing after the other — he’s always 100 miles an hour. He’s sent pals a picture of the island and has been telling everyone he’s buying it.His next fight will cover the costs for his yacht and island so why not is his attitude.”Drake’s Island is a 6.5 acre island about 500 metres from land in Plymouth Sound. The island — formerly named St Nicholas Island —was fortified from the 16th century due to its strategic position. It is said to be a heritage sight of national importance and part of the island is a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument.

It was purchased by businessman Morgan Phillips in 2019.

The historic island was put up for sale in 2024 but failed to sell.

It has now been put back on the market through specialist estate agent Carter Jonas. Sun.
