It gets worse for Chevrons

Sports Reporter
WHAT was supposed to be a stroll in the park for the Chevrons ended as a catastrophe with the humiliating series defeat at the hands of the Afghanistan.

The Chevrons have only won four of their last 11 games against Associate teams in both T20 and ODI format.

Afganistan made a mockery of Zimbabwe’s lofty status, as one of the world’s leading 10 cricket playing nations, by winning the ODI and Twenty20 series.

Senior players in the form of Hamilton Masakadza, Vusi Sibanda and Prosper Utseya were dropped for most of these games.

Youngsters like Luke Jongwe, Wellington Masakadza and Brian Chari were drafted in.

And, it appears, they have just shown that they are not ready for the big occasion and while the old horses could misfire here and there, when it came to taking on the lightweights, they usually won.

Of course, Afghanistan were ranked higher than Zimbabwe in the Twenty20 rankings, ahead of their battle, but the Chevrons should still have had a lot of firepower to defeat the visitors.

That they didn’t is an indictment on the state of the game and, with a tour of an in-form Bangladesh coming, there could be more misery for the Chevrons and those who support them.

The Tigers have been imperious at home and it’s very likely that the Chevrons are likely to find the going tough on this tour.
