MABELREIGN Shopping Centre in Harare is now being likened by some of residents to “Sodom and Gomorrah.”
The complex is now home to more than seven liquor stores and residents say the shopping centre has become a hub for pollution, prostitution, crime and drug abuse in the area. The illegal vendors at the complex are alleged to be selling illicit drugs such as crystal meth and exposing the youths in the area to dangers of drug and substance use.
“It’s disheartening to witness the rapid decline of our once vibrant Mabelreign Shopping Centre into what can only be described as Sodom and Gomorrah,” said one resident called Mai Robbie.
“The influx of carwashes and the associated social ills have eroded the essence of our community.”
Another resident, Thomas Hwari, said the Harare City Council needed to come up with measures to safeguard the shopping centre.
“We urge the City of Harare to take decisive action against the owners of these establishments and to bring about the necessary changes to rehabilitate the shopping centre.
“It’s imperative for the authorities to step in and restore order before the situation worsens.”
