Ivanovic through to Paris last eight

Paris – Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic defeated Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 yesterday to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open for the first time since she claimed the title in 2008.

Seventh-seeded Ivanovic goes on to face Elina Svitolina of Ukraine. She became the first woman from Ukraine to reach the French Open quarter-finals when she defeated France’s Alize Cornet 6-2, 7-6 (11/9) in a fourth round tie.

Cornet’s defeat means that there are no French players left in the women’s tournament. — Reuters
