Jailed 13 months for stealing ZESA post-paid meters

A MUTARE man was jailed for 13 months after being convicted of breaking into the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) maintenance depot, and steal 28 post-paid electricity meters.

The convict Vitalis Madzekenye, will serve an effective eight months, after five months were suspended for five years on usual conditions.

Magistrate Perseverance Makala presided over the matter and convicted Madzekenye of unlawful entry.

Ms Sandra Mlambo prosecuted.

“On March 15, 2025, Madzekenye, who is of no fixed abode, broke into the ZETDC Mutare maintenance depot and stole 28 post-paid electricity meters, valued at US$2 800. He cut a hole in the perimeter fence, and forced the door open. He was apprehended at the Green Market in Sakubva while attempting to sell the stolen meters. The stolen property was recovered and positively identified by ZETDC’s loss control officer,” said Ms Mlambo.
