DEFENDER Emmanuel Jalai is undaunted by his relatively short stature, insisting that it will not be a hindrance in the Warriors’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Nigeria in Uyo today.
Nigeria boasts of tall and physical players.
If selected to play, Jalai will have to battle it out against the likes of Victor Boniface, Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, and William Troost-Ekong.
The Dynamos captain, who made his debut for the Warriors in their 2-2 draw against Benin last week, expressed gratitude to coach Michael Nees for giving him the opportunity to play.
“I was happy with my debut, but I’m not content. I have to continue working hard and take games as they come,” Jalai said.
He acknowledged that the weather conditions in Uyo will be challenging, but he is confident that the team will adapt.
“We had a good training session despite the heat. We have to adapt, and by Tuesday, we hope to have acclimatised to the weather,” he said
Jalai also downplayed concerns about his height, saying that it’s not a determining factor in his ability to compete on the field.
“Football is not just about size, but about how you impose yourself in every tussle. It’s about game intelligence, mentality, and physical preparation,” Jalai said.
Nigeria are hoping to build on their current momentum to subdue the Warriors but Jalai is confident that his team has the quality to compete.
“We have quality players, and so do they. It will be a tough game, but we will give it our best shot,” Jalai said.
