Diana Samkange, the gig is one of the many victory celebrations for Suluman.
He bagged three National Arts Merit Awards at a ceremony held for the first time in Bulawayo and beamed across Zimbabwe on ZBC/TV. He was picked as the Outstanding Male Musician, Outstanding Album for “Syllabus” and the coveted People’s Choice Award.
That has become the cause for a series of celebrations as Sulu joins his fans in throwing victory parties in different parts of the country.
His hit single “Sean Timba” is making waves on the airwaves despite the inconsistencies surrounding the meaning the of the song. Some say it is about a boy named Sean Timba who went missing at one of Sulu’s gigs.
Sulu has reiterated that the song castigates piracy but most people and his critics are convinced the song promotes violence. But whatever the case might be, “Sean Timba” is a good sing-along.
The fact that Sulu performed the song in Seychelles before a big crowd of people who do not speak or understand Shona is testament on its own.
So far, Sulu and his Orchestra Dendera Kings are sitting on top of the world and they can safely claim to be the best. It has been a good year for the dendera maestro Sulu and those who thought he was riding on his late father’s coat tails have been proved otherwise.
With just four albums up his sleeves, Sulu has steadily built a firm following as well as maintaining the dendera legacy. Not only is Sulu keeping the music alive but he is also reinventing the genre through collaborations.
He has done collaborations with the likes of Jah Prayzah, Shinsoman, Jean Masters and superstar Oliver Mtukudzi among others.
Former 2BG lead singer Diana has moved away from being an urban groover to a solid performer after she formed a band. Back then she would use backtracks but now Diana has learnt how to play mbira and her sound has become more traditional and mature.
Diana’s latest album “Kumazivandadzoka” is receiving generous airplay on most radio stations.
Her single “Kumagumo Erudo”, a love ditty, is a favourite of many. On the song Diana urges people to value their loved ones saying that they should not stop loving until the end of time.
Tsikai Taengwa, the manager of Jamaica Inn City, promised revellers a great time at the gig.
“This is a show not to be missed. Everything is now in place and we hope fans will have a good time when Sulu and Diana take to the stage. We urge fans to come in their numbers and celebrate with Sulu.
“We are also delighted to announce that Jamaica Inn City has completed its refurbishment and those who like to take time out should visit us,” he said.
