Bulawayo residents will be taken back in time as some film producers are working on a movie of a “once-popular” ghost, Jane who posed as a prostitute in the late 80s to early 90’s.
Jane was famous for vanishing on clients who would have engaged her from various bars which she used to frequent in the city centre as well as high-density suburbs of Pelandaba (Number 6), Mpopoma and Old Magwegwe.
“Jane frequented nightclubs and shebeens mostly during weekends. She’d lure men, only to disappear mysteriously when they reached the Pelandaba Cemetery,” said a regular patron from Manor hotel.
In the early 90’s, Jane is said to have vanished and never returned, leaving some patrons lonely apparently, especially those who love spending quality with women of the night.
As a result, concerned filmmakers have come up with a script which will narrate Jane’s life, especially her vanishing antics. A trailer of the movie is available online with the movie set to be completed by end of year.
One of the producers, Kudakwashe Takundwa said lack of finance had hindered progress.
“We’re facing financial challenges which we’re confident we’ll overcome in the production of the movie. With this movie, we hope to tell Bulawayo stories, reminiscing about the good old days,” Takundwa said.
Takundwa who produced Qiniso – a low budget film which was labelled sub-standard by many, said they had learnt from previous mistakes and promised a top notch product.
“The production of Jane the Ghost is coming up well and I can assure people that there’ll be a vast improvement from Qiniso. We’re taking our time to shoot and edit this movie so that it’s perfect.
“We learnt a lot from Qiniso and we’re improving on our mistakes.”
Meanwhile, Jane the Ghost producers have teamed up with a local designer, Annie Maliki, to host a fashion show which will be a build up to the movie premiere on a date to be advised.
The fashion show to be held on November 21 at Hope Centre in Bulawayo is expected to ‘resurrect’ Jane the Ghost through fashion. The movie premiere date will be announced at the fashion show where entertainment will be provided by poet Philani Amadeous Nyoni and musician, Donna C.
Maliki said she was hard at work preparing her fashion range which would be in line with themes that are synonymous with ghost stories.
“Although I’ve have no clue on whom Jane the Ghost was, I’m working on a range which will be a fusion of Gothic and punk rock with black as the main colour,” said Maliki.
