WOMEN from Bulawayo and Insiza District converged in Bulawayo on Friday to deliberate on how women contribute to the country’s economy and challenges they face.
Hosted by Emthonjeni Women’s Forum at a local hotel, the event brings together women from different economic backgrounds to share their experiences on how they contribute to national development.
Some of the participating women are involved in self-help projects to support their families and communities.
During discussions women said some of the work they do may not be rewarded financially but is crucial in keeping families and society intact.
“We take care of families cooking, washing and raising children. These may seem our everyday tasks but it’s work that we do,” said one of the participants.
Some of the participants shared challenges they still face in accessing land in rural areas as some are still denied land if they are unmarried.
They said this deprives them of economic opportunities as most economic activities are based on the land.
The women said despite Government’s push for women empowerment, their voices are sometimes not realised due to culture, traditional and religious settings in their areas.
