FOR a team that once had a dance in top-flight football, Power Master FC is one of the biggest social football clubs in the country.
After Kiglon were relegated to Division One, the club became defunct and was converted into a social football club and renamed Power Master.
The club formed a more structured social football league that saw the birth of the Sunday Social League.
It’s a league that currently prides itself as one of the most organised semi-proffsional leagues in the country.
Last season, Sunday Social League had 16 affiliated teams, with two of them defaulting along the way due to financial challenges.
Jackson Munyaka, the only surviving founding member of the league, is the patron.
Jackson and his late wife, Janet, were directors of Shooting Stars and Kiglon FC.
Recently, the league held the Power Master Janet Munyaka Memorial Invitational Tournament commemorating the life and efforts of the late veteran broadcaster Janet Munyaka.
“Over the years we have been having different tournaments in our league,” said Jackson.
“As Power Master we then decided to stage a Power Master invitational tournament from 2014.
“As a league, we have different tournaments every season, but this one is the biggest of them all.”
“When my wife passed away, we decided as a league to name the tournament after her,” he said.
A number of teams outside the Sunday Social League were also invited to take part in the tournament.
“Now we invite one or two teams from out of our league. Normally we pick from academies or those we feel are not well exposed to showcase their talent.
“We also invited ZBC where my wife worked to play with their mates in print broadcasting from Zim-papers in an exhibition match. These are the people that worked hand-in-hand with Janet, and we felt it befitting for them to be here as well.
“Janet was well involved in football. I was a sportsperson from childhood and was always involved in football and karate, so she supported me immensely in my sporting activities.
“She was there when we partnered Shooting Stars and we were both co-directors before we bought Kiglon and we were the two directors of the club which we later changed to Power Master,” he said.
