Thelma Kapisa’s jazz album was launched recently at the University of Zimbabwe’s Beit Hall at a function attended by a few invited guests at the institution and the songstress’s family and friends. Despite the low audience turnout, the jazz singer performed wholeheartedly as she gave renditions of some tracks on her debut album called “Fona” including the title track as well as “Rudo”, “Kandiro”, “Hoza” and “Handeyi”.
The occasion also saw a number of local singers also take to the stage including rhumba crooner Tisheme, backing vocalist Ethel Musunza as well as Kudzai Nyakudya who sang a number of gospel tracks including “Manuwere” and “Gadziriro”.
Urban grooves singer Ba Shupi also graced the occasion and sang a duet with Kapisa before going solo and giving renditions of some of his popular tunes as well as a touching gospel track titled “Zvandapiwa Nashe (handirambe)”.
The show was hosted by popular stand up comedian from Simuka Comedy, Louis Napata Chinyanga aka Prince of Comedy, alongside DJ Bigz.
An auction of CD’s was conducted with several copies bought by revellers for prices ranging from US$5 to US$50.
Kapisa thanked the audience for their support and promised to keep on delivering good music to the people.
“I appreciate the support of my family who have always backed me in all that I do, especially my father and mum who sent me to university to get a degree but gave me the go-ahead to pursue my passion which is music,” she said.
The jazz crooner has several shows lined up around Harare and is also planning to take her music around the country in order for more people to appreciate her music.
In addition, she is set to tour South Africa later on in the year.
