Children who want to become junior councillors will now have to campaign at their school and other schools to garner votes, Alderman Lungani Zwangobani has said.
“The selection process of the junior council used to be that the school teachers identify children who they felt and thought would represent their schools best at this platform.
“Having studied the changes in child participation and what this programme is really meant to achieve, we have changed the selection process. Now starting with next year’s Junior Council we introduced a new system.
“We now talk of democratically elected Junior Councillors and Harare Junior Council is the only child participation programme in Zimbabwe practising this. Interested students have to campaign at their schools and other children vote for them by secret ballot and it’s as fair and as simple as that,” Alderman Zwangobani said.
“This process makes the programme open to every child and the elected children true representatives of others while accountable to them at the same time,“ he added.
He also revealed that the process of campaigning and voting makes very child aware of the existence of the Junior Council unlike a situation where a few kids are pulled out of class to go to Town House to be councillors. – CL Writer.
