Scores of desperate job-seekers have lost thousands of dollars to con artists who make them believe that they can facilitate employment in Government and the private sector. Police are urging people to be wary of such criminals.
Most of the con artists are also advertising in the local media saying that they can facilitate employment after training people and charging them a certain amount. Last week, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said people should not pay money to be employed.
This came after 30 job-seekers lost a combined $3 000 in Gokwe to a 37-year-old woman who made them believe that she would facilitate their enrolment at Chitungwiza and Parirenyatwa schools of nursing.
Shibbah Chikono, who masqueraded as a medical doctor based at Parirenyatwa Hospital, has since been arrested in connection with the case.
Police said Chikono made the victims pay $100 each between April and August so that she would “facilitate” their enrolment.
In June, the Zimbabwe National Army warned the public to be wary of illegal notices that were circulating on social media purporting that the organisation was recruiting members through the platform.
ZNA director Army Public Relations Lieutenant Colonel Alphios Makotore advised job-seekers to be wary of criminal elements that were duping people and soliciting for payments in return for recruitment into the army.
In May, the Air Force of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services issued similar warnings.
