Herald senior writer Sifelani Tsiko has won a Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) award for excellence in reporting and communicating issues related to food security.
Tsiko, a veteran journalist, walked away with a prize and a certificate for his efforts to give a face and a voice to rural communities fighting against hunger. The 2017 #zeroHunger champions media awards were organised by FAO to raise awareness on food security issues and recognise media professionals in Zimbabwe who have focused their reporting on topics relating to food security, sustainable agriculture and development.
Tsiko was honoured for consistently covering the agriculture sector and unpacking complex development issues in a way that highlighted the plight of rural farmers and informed policy and decision-making.
“Sifelani’s piece on irrigation rehabilitation was key to detailing how irrigation can be a game changer in improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers,” read part of the FAO citation.
“We hope this token of appreciation will go a long way in encouraging you and the entire Zimbabwean media fraternity to continue being #zeroHunger champions.” Tsiko, who has spent more than two decades in the media industry, has in the past also received numerous other awards and accolades for his work.
