Judgment date for Chivero boat owner set

Weale (27), Enock Yolani Zulu (36) and Joseph Abrahams (37) appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe who set the judgment date after the defence had closed its case.
The four are being charged with 11 counts of culpable homicide.
During cross-examination by Prosecutor Mr Michael Reza, Abrahams confirmed supplying life jackets to the relatives of the accused who were in the boat together with the 11 children, who had no jackets.
Ameer had earlier told the court that he had taken the boat to the lake for a fun day with his relatives and friends.
He said he had enough life jackets for his relatives and that the boat was not for public use.
Abrahams concurred with Ameer when he told the court that their relatives were putting on life saving jackets.
Ameer and Abrahams were speaking after Mr Reza said they denied other passengers life jackets.
Weale also told the court in his evidence-in-chief that he was wearing a life saving jacket when the accident occurred.
He however, denied ever winking at Zulu before the boat started sinking.
Allegations are that on December 25 last year, Ameer asked Zulu to drive the boat and Weale to collect money from passengers.
Ameer allegedly failed to provide life jackets to passengers on the boat.
Abrahams, Mr Reza said, loaded 17 passengers in a boat with capacity to carry six passengers, with Ameer allegedly instructing Zulu to drive the boat with passengers without the life jackets.
Zulu, it is alleged, did not have a licence to drive the boat, but drove it into the lake around 6.10pm.
