MORE than 10 students at Mutare Polytechnic have tested positive for Covid-19 this morning, although authorities at the institution are keeping a tight lid on the outbreak.
The Manica Post has it on good authority that the discovery of Covid-19 cases at the tertiary institution came after a resident student showed symptoms of the viral disease before testing positive for coronavirus.
Upon conducting contact tracing, more students tested positive.
Day scholars gathered at the gates for hours in the morning after they were barred from entering the college as authorities paved way for quarantining of those who tested positive as well as making provision for safer interaction between non-resident and resident students.
When contacted for comment, Mutare Polytechnic principal, Ms Poniso Watama, could neither confirm nor deny the outbreak.
“If there are cases of that nature, officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Care are the appropriate people to comment,” she said.
However, reliable sources at the college confided in this newspaper that more than 10 students tested positive, and testing was still being conducted into the afternoon.
Manicaland Provincial Medical Director, Dr Simon Nyadundu said: “I have not yet been briefed. Let me find out.”
The discovery of Covid-19 cases at Mutare Polytechnic comes amid panic over the possibility of a fourth wave after an Omnicron Covid-19 variant was recently discovered in neighbouring South Africa.
