JUST IN: Police instructed to desist from delaying motorists at roadblocks

POLICE Commissioner- General Godwin Matanga has instructed police officers to desist from causing unnecessary delays for motorists at roadblocks.

In a statement National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said Commissioner-General Matanga issued this directive to police commanders at provincial, district and station level.

“The Commissioner General of the Police has directed police commanders at provincial, district and station level to ensure that police officers on the ground minimise unnecessary delays to the public at roadblocks and checkpoints,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said as most of the sectors of the economy were opening, motorists should avoid causing traffic congestion, driving against the flow of traffic, crossing red robots and exhibiting reckless driving conduct

He further warned members of the public against violating Covid-19 regulations under the Level 2 lockdown which was announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on September 7.

“The police will ensure compliance by the public through roadblocks, check points, surveillance and general patrols in the CBD’s, residential and industrial areas. Business operators are therefore implored to cooperate with police officers by strictly observing the operational hours of 0800hours to 1900 hours.

“The public is urged to observe Covid-19 regulations which include wearing of masks, practicing social distancing and sanitisation while accessing various services in banks supermarkets, health facilities and restaurants,” he said,

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said beer hall operators and night clubs who defy Government’s order to remain closed will be arrested.

He said the police will also ensure that public gatherings are held within the stipulated time and do not exceed 100 people.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi also warned the public against violating the curfew. He urged transporters that have been permitted to engage in intercity operations to observe Covid-19 protocols.

“We also urge bottle stores restaurants, hotels and lodge operators to observe the stipulated Covid-19 safety measures set by the Government,” he said.
